Platform for Mayor of Nashville, PBredesen4 – Comments With Dr. James Haney Presents*Platform for Mayor of Nashville, with PBredesen,Part 4 This Video has Enhanced Text (et) Nashville, like other cities throughout America, has devoted considerable efforts in dealing with substance abuse, especially street drugs. Bredesen believes that many young people are attracted to drugs because of the lack of a viable economic alternative. He sees summer jobs as an alternative for many but “the larger issue is one of education and opening horizons and giving vision and opportunity to our youth.” He has opened the Mayor’s office on Drug Policy and appointed a director to work in educating the community on the impact of drugs. Last year the Mayor organized a Mayor’s Task Force on AIDS to investigate Nashville’s response to the AIDS crisis. The Task force report favored a system that could handle indigent as well as persons with insurance. “In essence, to use the profits from those with insurance to help fund the care for those without insurance, and do it in a way that was part of the mainstream in health care delivery.” As a result of this effort Nashville organized an AIDS Clinic. Baptist Hospital provided space for the clinic and Hospital Corporation of America assisted in getting some of the covenants on the building changed. The AIDS clinic has the potential as a model for the nation, said the Mayor. “We think of ourselves as being the center of health care excellence in the United States.” When the city decided to construct …
